Ahh Mesotherapy. The treatment originated in France in the early '50s, with Dr. Michel Pistor spearheading the research. It's a non-surgical technique that involves the injection of plant extracts, vitamins, and other chemicals into subcutaneous fat, usually without any anesthetics (yes, you'll be fully conscious of those needles!). The injections supposedly target fat cells only, causing them to rupture. Indeed, after your $600 session the area will be inflamed and red, and burn at the touch. Fun stuff. Effectiveness of Mesotherapy Injections

Even though mesotherapy has been performed for over 50 years, no conclusive evidence yet exists that the chemical compounds found in mesotherapy act on fat cells alone -- you could be eliminating your muscle cells as well. Physicians have always worried about the safety of mesotherapy, simply because of the dearth of scientific study. Some have called mesotherapy merely a fad with conceivably dangerous side effects. Other physicians say that there is really no scientific proof that mesotherapy even works at all. What's worse is that the FDA can't control the use of the different mixtures that practitioners inject into patient's bodies--that falls under the jurisdiction of state medical boards. So you never really know exactly what someone has put into the syringe. No wonder so many dermatologists and plastic surgeons are alarmed at the growing proliferation of mesotherapy.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons even issued a statement to that effect that they would not endorse mesotherapy because to this day there have been no studies that demonstrate the effectiveness or safety of the drugs injected into your body during mesotherapy.
